Yeah, the whole bed is mortise and tenon
the only fasteners in it are the ones for the bed rails. Although I am seriously considering getting a Festool Domino to make that A LOT easier, but jimminy $1500 is an awful lot for a hand tool.
As for the lumber, I cheated big-time on the walnut. About 30 years ago, my dad's company was on a jobsite where they had to remove a huge black walnut tree. City was going to show up the next day with a wood chipper to get rid of it, so he kinda stole it. Had it sawed up and stacked in the garage for decades and never did anything with it.
As I got into woodworking, I took more and more of it until I finally ended up with all of it. Made a futon, a coffee table, and that bed out of the stack. All I've got left is maybe a 5 gal bucket full of cutoffs I can use for small projects, inlay work, etc.
Do have a Wurth supplier in Roanoke that has most hardwoods for $5-8bf. But if I need a bunch of lumber, there are enough people who live around here with land and a portable sawmill who will sell you an entire tree for probably half-retail.
